Furniture Disposal Overview
Old furniture is one of the most common items people need to get rid of, and one of the most frustrating. Regular trash service does not accept furniture, most pieces are too heavy for one person to move, and finding the right disposal option depends on the type, condition, and material of each piece.
Whether you are moving, renovating, downsizing, or just tired of that dining set from 2005, this guide covers every option available to Oregon residents for getting rid of furniture responsibly.
If you need help with a specific item, we have dedicated guides for couches and sofas, mattresses, and box springs.
Donating Furniture in Oregon
Donation is the best option when furniture is still usable. It keeps items out of landfills, helps someone in need, and can provide you with a tax deduction.
Major Oregon Donation Organizations
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — Locations in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, and Medford. Accepts most furniture types in good condition. Many locations offer free pickup for larger items.
- St. Vincent de Paul — Multiple locations throughout the Willamette Valley. Accepts furniture, offers pickup in service areas.
- Community Warehouse (Portland) — Provides furniture to families referred by social service agencies. Accepts beds, dressers, tables, chairs, and more.
- Furniture Share (Eugene) — Lane County nonprofit that furnishes homes for families transitioning out of homelessness.
- Goodwill — Some locations accept furniture. Smaller pieces can be dropped off; larger pieces may require a pickup appointment.
Donation Criteria
Most organizations require furniture to be:
- Clean and free of major stains, odors, or pest issues
- Structurally sound — no broken legs, collapsed drawers, or cracked frames
- Free of rips, tears, or significant cosmetic damage
- Smoke-free and pet-odor-free (some organizations are flexible on this)

Selling or Giving Away
Online marketplaces are effective for furniture, especially pieces with remaining useful life.
Best Platforms for Furniture
- Facebook Marketplace — The most active platform for used furniture in Oregon. Listing at $0 (free) ensures fast pickup.
- Craigslist — Still popular in Portland and Eugene. The "free" section moves furniture quickly.
- OfferUp — Growing in popularity for local furniture sales.
- Buy Nothing groups — Hyperlocal Facebook groups where neighbors give items for free. Very active in Portland, Eugene, Salem, and Bend.
- Nextdoor — Post to your immediate neighborhood. Someone nearby may come pick it up the same day.
Tips for Fast Pickup
- Take clear, well-lit photos from multiple angles.
- Include exact dimensions — people need to know if it fits their space and their vehicle.
- State the condition honestly. Mention any flaws upfront.
- Specify that the buyer/taker must provide their own loading and transport.
- Put "CURB ALERT" in the title for free items you are leaving outside. These often disappear within hours in Portland and Eugene.
Professional Furniture Removal
Professional furniture removal is the fastest, most convenient option. A crew arrives, carries everything out, loads it, and handles proper disposal — including donation, recycling, and responsible disposal of anything that cannot be salvaged.
Typical Costs by Item
| Item | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Chair or end table | $50-$75 |
| Desk or dining table | $75-$125 |
| Dresser or bookshelf | $75-$125 |
| Sofa or loveseat | $100-$175 |
| Sectional sofa | $150-$250 |
| Mattress + box spring | $100-$200 |
| Full room cleanout | $300-$600 |
Bundling multiple items is the best value strategy. Removing five or six pieces at once costs significantly less per item than removing them one at a time. Our cost guide explains how pricing works.
Curbside Bulky Pickup
Most Oregon waste haulers offer bulky item pickup for $25 to $50 per item. Contact your hauler to schedule:
- Waste Management — Portland metro area
- Republic Services — Parts of Portland, Salem, Eugene
- Sanipac — Eugene-Springfield and Lane County
You are responsible for getting furniture to the curb. Scheduling typically takes one to two weeks. This works for items you can move yourself or with a helper.
Self-Haul to Transfer Stations
If you have a truck, self-hauling is affordable. Oregon transfer stations charge by weight.
- Metro Transfer Stations (Portland): $15 to $50 depending on the amount of furniture.
- Lane County (Eugene): $12 to $35 at Glenwood Transfer Station.
- Marion County (Salem): $10 to $35 at the county transfer station.
If you do not own a truck, renting one from Home Depot ($20 to $30 for 75 minutes) or U-Haul is affordable for a single load.
Disassembly Tips by Furniture Type
Tables and Desks
Most tables have legs that bolt or screw on. Flip the table over, remove the legs, and the top becomes flat enough to fit through doors and into vehicles. Keep the hardware in a bag if you plan to donate the table.
Bed Frames
Metal bed frames typically fold flat. Wood bed frames have side rails that detach from the headboard and footboard with bolts or hooks. A disassembled bed frame fits easily in a car trunk.
Bookshelves and Dressers
Remove all drawers and shelves first — this reduces weight dramatically. For flat-pack style furniture (IKEA, etc.), you can disassemble to the original panels if you have the right Allen keys.
Sofas and Recliners
See our dedicated guide on how to dispose of an old couch for detailed disassembly instructions.
What NOT to Do
- Do not dump furniture illegally. Oregon fines for illegal dumping start at $2,500 and can reach $10,000 per item.
- Do not leave furniture beside a donation bin after hours. This is still illegal dumping. Donation centers are not responsible for items left outside.
- Do not put furniture in your regular trash bin. Your hauler will not pick it up and may charge a contamination fee.
- Do not donate items that are broken, infested, or heavily soiled. Donation centers have limited space and cannot accept everything.
